The importance is the the MERV. What is MERV? This measures the filters effectiveness. MERV stands for the minimum efficiency reporting value. Most filters are labeled with a MERV rating number, which measures a filter's ability to trap particles ranging in size from 3 to 10 microns.

Residential filters commonly have a MERV rating of 1-12. The higher the merv rating: the more efficient the filter is, the more particles it can filter. MERV is an indiustry standard rating, so it can be used to compare filters made by different companies. Below is an explanation of what a few of the MERV rating numbers mean.

1. A MERV rating of 6 means the filter is 35-50 percent minimally efficient at capturing the measured particles.

2. A MERV rating of 8 means the filter is 70-85 percent minimally efficient at capturing the measured particles.

3. A MERV rating of 11 means the filter is 85-95 percent minimally efficient at capturing the measured particles.

Please be very sure to ask your Gossett professional about what MERV rating is best for your system. There are situations where the highest MERV rating may NOT be best for your system.

If you have a media filter system you should always use the cheaper 1" throw away filters in your return airs. They do not create the suction that the pleated filters do which can cause your system to work harder than it needs (which over time may cause problems). When using a Media cleaner system the pleated filters are not recommended. They would cause the HVAC system to work harder.
